Ben struck suddenly. Red. As his first opponent stumbled, Ben grabbed his holographic sleeves, and bent his weight to throw him. But the ninja recovered, struggled. And a level three electric shock jabbed into him as a second foe struck him from behind.

Ben cried out — in shame more than in pain. He had enough strength to propel the first ninja into the second and enough nimbleness to parry the thrust of the third. Doing so reestablished the balance of the conflict.

But he’d been hurt. He was surrounded, encircled. And his enemies would not fall.

Cally had been sitting in the rec room for over half an hour now since the fight, but Jake still hadn’t put in an appearance. She supposed she should have realized that Jake was likely to ditch the party in case Ben was there, bitter and brooding. Well, he’d made a good call. So now she had a choice: either to sit and endure Eddie’s apparently inexhaustible supply of moronic one-liners, or to leave him to it and seek Jake elsewhere. In reality, there was no choice at all.

Because she needed him now. She really needed to see him. Since Jake had stopped her from walking out on the school, she’d tried, struggled, and strained to fit in, and, for the most part, she’d succeeded. Her grades were stronger, her computer skills in particular gaining increasing respect, even from Ben on one or two grudging occasions. She was beginning to feel less like an outcast and less like a failure.

And then Stromfeld had to come along and ruin her sense of progress again. Her self-esteem had been obliterated with the bomb. Back to square one.

Back to Jake.

She could tell Eddie was disappointed. He attempted to disguise his feelings with an “Excellent, gives me a chance to share myself around a bit,” but it was about as convincing as a pair of dark glasses and a false moustache. She patted him encouragingly on the arm as she left. It wasn’t Eddie’s fault that he wasn’t Jake. He was nice in his own way. Cally even forgave him that ridiculous incident during the SkyBike race.

But it was Jake’s reassurance that she needed now, his strength and words of comfort. And, she realized, consciously for the first time, that she also needed something more.

Electricity stabbed into Ben’s stomach, twisting like a blade and crackling along his spine like a lightning rod. Ben cried out. Had his eyes been open and not jammed tight in pain, he might have expected to see his shock suit blacken and burn as the ninjas ruthlessly and remorselessly cut him to pieces.

He was flailing now, floundering — all discipline in his defense lost. He was an easy target. He was dead meat. But holograms did not feel pity or mercy, and they could not be stopped with screams.

But he could stop them. He could end the torture by uttering two small words into his communicator: End program. Ending the program would end the pain. But it would also signal defeat.
